Abstract

Summer pruning of kiwifruit vines can play an important role in controlling vegetative growth and improving crop quantity and quality. In this study, the effect of three different methods of summer pruning, including the conventional method, zero-leaf pruning, and leader pruning, was evaluated in a two-year (2019 and 2020) experiment conducted on 15-year-old kiwifruit vines cv. Hayward in Ramsar city as a combined analysis based on a randomized complete block design with three replications. In the conventional pruning method, the lateral branches of the crown fruiting area were removed, and the fruiting lateral branches with unlimited growth were pruned at the fourth leaf after the last fruit. In the zero-leaf pruning method, while removing the non-fruiting lateral branches, the fruiting arms with indefinite growth were pruned from the last fruit. In the leader pruning method, pruning was applied to both the hanging fruiting area and the leader branch area. Some indicators of vegetative growth during the growing season and fruit quality at harvest time were evaluated. The results showed that the highest fruit dry matter (17.21%) and vitamin C content (48.07 mg 100 g⁻¹ fresh weight), and the lowest leaf area index (3.41), were observed in the leader pruning method. However, the different methods of summer pruning showed no significant differences in fruit quality, size, and yield of kiwifruit. Overall, based on the results, the leader pruning method could be suggested as the most appropriate summer pruning method for kiwifruit cv. Hayward due to lower leaf area (lower transpiration level) and higher fruit dry matter and vitamin C content.
