Abstract

Oleaster (Elaeagnus angustifolia L.) is a fruit belonging to the Elaeagnaceae family. Genetic diversity in fruits is significant, and it is necessary to study genetic diversity in different populations of a species using morphological and biochemical characteristics in order to identify the best traits for improved production. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the diversity of morphological traits in some populations of oleaster and was conducted as a completely randomized design with three replications across 17 regions of Isfahan and Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari provinces from September to November 2020. The results showed that the studied populations had statistically significant differences at the 1% probability level in terms of morphological characteristics. The highest fruit length was observed in the Shahrekord sample (20.98 ± 0.62 mm), and the highest values for fruit diameter (14.08 ± 0.46 mm), sphericity percentage (95.84% ± 0.73), and marketability coefficient (93.83 ± 1.08) were obtained in the Koohpayeh 2 sample, whereas the highest fruit weight (10.44 ± 0.62 g) was recorded in the Maymeh 1 sample. In the principal component analysis of oleaster populations, the eigenvalues obtained from the first three principal components explained 49.12%, 31.79%, and 11.01% of the variance, respectively, accounting for a total of 91.92% of the total variance of the variables. Furthermore, cluster analysis revealed three distinct clusters based on average fruit length and diameter, as well as traits related to fruit color. The results of this study suggest that oleaster fruits from the central regions of Iran exhibit considerable diversity in terms of morphological traits, which can be exploited through selection depending on breeding objectives.
