Abstract

A two-year factorial experiment based on a randomized complete block design was conducted to investigate the effects of deficit irrigation and superabsorbent materials on the yield and mineral composition of Granny Smith apple fruit. The treatments consisted of three irrigation levels (100, 75, and 50% of crop evapotranspiration requirements) and four superabsorbent polymer rates (0, 100, 200, and 300 g per tree). The results showed that, over the two experimental years, fruit yield and size did not differ between treated and control trees. Application of the superabsorbent polymer at 200 g per tree increased fruit weight in both years. Deficit irrigation had no significant effect on chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, or total chlorophyll contents in the apple peel in either year, whereas the superabsorbent polymer at 200 g per tree had a significant positive effect on chlorophyll content. Fruit magnesium content decreased significantly only in response to the superabsorbent polymer in both years. Neither factor significantly affected phosphorus or calcium content in the first year; however, deficit irrigation treatments significantly increased fruit phosphorus and calcium contents in the second year. Overall, irrigation at 75% of crop evapotranspiration requirements is recommended because it saves water without reducing yield, while application of 200 g of superabsorbent polymer per tree may improve fruit quality and mitigate the effects of stress.
