Abstract

Lemons and sour limes are among the most economically important horticultural crops in southern Iran. Witches’ broom disease is a major constraint on Mexican lime production. Preliminary evaluations showed that the Pars sour lime cultivar exhibited superior quality characteristics and tolerance to witches broom disease. Further evaluations included measurements of fruit dimensions (length, width, and thickness), density, peel thickness, fruit weight, juice percentage, seed number, peel color indices (a* and b*), hue angle, chroma, the citrus color index (CCI), soluble solids content, titratable acidity, technological index, ascorbic acid content, antioxidant capacity, and total phenolic content. Mineral elements in the fruit were also measured. The results showed that Pars sour lime fruit had greater weight, volume, length, major diameter, and minor diameter than Mexican lime fruit. Based on the a* index, Mexican lime peel was more negative in color values, indicating a greener color, than Pars sour lime peel. Pars sour lime had a higher juice percentage (52.64%) than Mexican lime (45.71%). Total acid content in Pars sour lime was similar to that of the control cultivar. The vitamin C content of Pars sour lime (43.95 mg per 100 g) was slightly higher than that of Mexican lime (38.33 mg per 100 g). The antioxidant capacity and total phenolic content of Pars sour lime fruit were similar to those of Mexican lime. The mineral analysis showed that, with the exception of phosphorus, manganese, and copper, the mineral contents of Pars sour lime were similar to or higher than those of Mexican lime. Pars sour lime could replace lemon and sour lime trees affected by witches’ broom disease in Hormozgan, southern Kerman, Bushehr, Sistan and Baluchestan, and Fars provinces.
