Abstract

Supplementary pollination can improve the quantity and quality of kiwifruit. Therefore, the present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different supplementary pollination methods on the quantitative characteristics and fruit color indices of ‘Hayward’ kiwifruit in order to identify the most effective and practical supplementary pollination method. In this experiment, manual pollination using pollen collected from male (Tomuri) flowers, as well as spray pollination using pure pollen (collected from male plants) and spray pollination using impure pollen (collected from the entrance of honeybee hives during the opening of flowers on male kiwifruit plants), were used. Compared with naturally pollinated fruits, fruits pollinated by spraying with impure pollen had higher seed number (16.85%), length (8.50%), diameter (13.40%), volume (18.68%), weight (14.89%), and dry matter content (10.23%), while having lower density (4.64%). This may be attributed to more complete pollination of the flowers, increased seed production, and increased production of growth hormones within the fruit, which resulted in increased growth of the ovary wall and, consequently, fruit growth. In addition, fruits pollinated by spraying with impure pollen had the lowest L* and a* color indices of the fruit flesh (i.e., greater greenness) compared with the other fruits. Based on the results of the present study, supplementary pollination by spraying with impure pollen can be recommended to kiwifruit growers as an effective and practical method for increasing the quantity of ‘Hayward’ kiwifruit at harvest.
