Abstract

One of the most important factors contributing to postharvest losses in banana fruit is the disorder caused by low temperature. Since chilling stress leads to the loss of integrity and permeability of cell membranes and consequently to ion leakage, an experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of brassinosteroid at different temperatures on the storage of ‘Cavendish’ banana fruit. In this study, biochemical responses and physiological changes in ‘Cavendish’ banana fruit were evaluated under three levels of brassinosteroid (0, 2, and 6 μM), three temperature levels (control [20 ± 2 °C], 5 °C, and 12 °C), and four storage periods (1, 7, 14, and 21 days) in a completely randomized design with three replications. The interaction effect of temperature and brassinosteroid over the storage period on soluble solids content and ethylene production of banana fruit was significant. In addition, the two-way interaction between temperature and brassinosteroid significantly affected fruit firmness, ion leakage, and superoxide dismutase activity at the 1% probability level. Furthermore, the three-way interaction of 5 °C temperature and 6 μM brassinosteroid on the first day of storage reduced ethylene production in banana fruit by 32%. Application of brassinosteroid at 12 °C markedly reduced ion leakage by 42%. The application of brassinosteroid in combination with 12 °C increased superoxide dismutase activity by 89%, which was highly significant. Based on the results, banana fruits stored at 12 °C and treated with 6 μM brassinosteroid maintained the highest quality throughout the storage period.
