Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different pollen storage methods for 10 days on fruit set and yield of Deyri date palm at the Date Palm and Tropical Fruit Research Institute in Ahvaz. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with seven treatments and three replications over two years. The experimental treatments consisted of fresh strands (control), storage of intact male spathes in a freezer (-21 °C) and refrigerator (4 °C), storage of fresh strands in a freezer (-21 °C) and refrigerator (4 °C), and storage of dried strands in a freezer (-21 °C) and refrigerator (4 °C). Spathes of the Ghanami Red cultivar were used for pollination. At the time of pollination, seven clusters were selected from each Deyri date palm tree, and each cluster was manually pollinated with one of the treatments. The results showed that different pollen storage methods significantly affected pollen germination percentage, fruit set percentage, and fruit drop, with the best results obtained from the treatment involving storage of dried strands at -21 °C. Among the fruit-related indices, fruit weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, and soluble solids content were more strongly affected by the storage method treatment than the other traits. Fruit characteristics and yield in the treatment involving pollination with dried strands stored at -21 °C were similar to those obtained with fresh strands. The highest fruit set and cluster yield were obtained with the application of dried strands stored in a -21 °C freezer, followed by fresh strands and intact spathes stored in a freezer. Therefore, pollen storage method (type of pollen material, storage temperature, and pollen moisture) is an influential factor affecting fruit set and fruit yield in date palm.
