Abstract

Root structure varies among vegetative rootstocks and is considered an important trait in tolerance to various stresses. In this study, root traits, including the number of coarse roots (with a diameter greater than 2 mm), root length, horizontal root spread, fresh and dry weight, and root volume, were evaluated in 11 promising apple rootstock genotypes as part of a population derived from an apple vegetative rootstock breeding program, along with the vegetative apple rootstock MM111 as the control. Based on the results of cluster analysis, the three genotypes AR11, AR10, and AR8 showed the greatest similarity to the control rootstock MM111 in terms of the traits evaluated in this experiment. In addition, using the modified ideal genotype selection index, it was determined that the control rootstock MM111 had the highest degree of desirability among the experimental genotypes, with the greatest similarity to the absolute ideal genotype and an index of 0.84. This rootstock was followed by AR11, AR10, and AR8, with desirability indices of 0.82, 0.71, and 0.68, respectively. The roots of the AR1 and AR4 rootstock genotypes had the greatest length, fresh and dry weight, and volume, whereas the AR10, AR11, and MM111 rootstock genotypes had the lowest root length, fresh and dry weight, and volume compared with the other rootstock genotypes.
