Abstract

Due to their high nutritional value and attractiveness, the cultivation and production of blood orange fruit have increased considerably worldwide in recent years. Given the nature of citrus crops and the occurrence of natural and artificial hybrids and genotypes, the identification and selection of superior genotypes are of particular importance. Therefore, the present study was conducted in 2020 to evaluate the morpho-physiological characteristics of fruit from some blood orange genotypes at different ripening stages. In this experiment, six blood orange genotypes and two commercial cultivars, ‘Sanguin’ and ‘Gros Sanguin’, were harvested at four times at 30-day intervals, from 20 November to 20 February, and evaluated for some morpho-physiological traits. The results showed that delaying harvest significantly decreased fruit weight, length, diameter and thickness, volume, juice content, titratable acidity (TA), and the L* and hue indices of fruit peel color. It was also found that peel thickness, total soluble solids content, the TSS/TA ratio, and the chroma and a* indices of fruit peel color increased significantly with delayed harvesting. Among the genotypes evaluated, G2 and G3 generally showed relatively superior characteristics in terms of fruit size, color, and flavor (lower TA and higher TSS/TS ratio) compared with the other genotypes. Therefore, blood orange genotypes G2 and G3 harvested early (20 November) can be considered preliminary candidates for the selection of early-maturing commercial blood orange cultivars compared with the controls.
