Abstract

To investigate the effects of salinity on flower characteristics and fruit set in some promising olive cultivars, the present study was conducted as a factorial experiment in a randomized complete block design with three replications, involving two factors: salinity stress at four levels (no salinity stress with distilled-water irrigation, and 6, 12, and 18 dS m⁻¹ NaCl) and genotype at six levels (including Zard, Meshkat, Zagros, Sevillana, and Deyreh, and the superior local olive genotype Ds3) during 2021–2022 under field conditions. The results showed that increasing salinity stress reduced the number of inflorescences per branch, number of flowers per inflorescence, inflorescence length, number of perfect flowers per inflorescence, flowering branch length, and number of perfect flowers per branch. The Ds3 genotype exhibited the highest number of inflorescences per branch (5.76), number of flowers per inflorescence (17.83), inflorescence length (9.93 cm), number of fruits per branch (39.34), number of perfect flowers per inflorescence (8.25), flowering branch length (11.5 cm), number of perfect flowers per branch (11.26), and fruit set percentage (64.2%). The Ds3 genotype, which exhibited superior flowering and fruiting characteristics under salinity stress, performed better than the other cultivars evaluated in this study. Therefore, the use of this genotype for cultivation and further evaluation in saline soil or irrigation water is recommended in future studies.
