Abstract

Selection of salt-tolerant genotypes is an effective approach for dealing with saline water and soils. A greenhouse experiment was conducted from 2016 to 2018 in the greenhouse of the Department of Horticultural Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Hormozgan, to evaluate the morphological, physiological, and biochemical responses of guava seedlings to saline water. Twelve one-year-old seed-derived guava genotypes were irrigated with saline water (0.5 and 5 dS m⁻¹) for ten weeks. Treatment with saline water resulted in reductions in leaf relative water content, chlorophyll pigments, carotenoids, protein, anthocyanins, photosystem II photochemical efficiency, and shoot and leaf dry matter in guava genotypes. In addition, electrolyte leakage and the contents of soluble sugars, as well as the activities of protease, catalase, and peroxidase enzymes, showed increasing trends. The highest leaf and shoot dry matter at a salinity level of 5 dS m⁻¹ was observed in genotypes AC-04 and AC-05, respectively. The lowest leaf dry matter was recorded in genotypes AC-01, AC-02, AC-03, and AC-11 at 5 dS m⁻¹ salinity. The lowest shoot dry matter was observed in genotypes AC-02, AC-06, and AC-08 (49.76%, 50.60%, and 51.12%, respectively). Cluster analysis divided the genotypes into four groups. In the first group (AC-11, AC-10, and AC-12), the lowest levels of protein, peroxidase activity, and photosystem II photochemical efficiency, along with the highest ion leakage, were recorded. In the second group (AC-02, AC-01, and AC-03), the lowest levels of photosynthetic pigments and catalase activity were observed. The third group (AC-08, AC-07, AC-06, and AC-09) exhibited an intermediate response. Genotypes of AC-04 and AC-05 formed the fourth group, characterized by the highest leaf relative water content, pigment concentration, catalase and peroxidase activities, and leaf dry matter. Ultimately, AC-04 and AC-05 were identified as salt-tolerant genotypes, while AC-11, AC-10, and AC-12 were classified as salt-sensitive genotypes.
